Bahamas Golf Guide
The Bahamas is proof that a golf trip and a beach vacation do not have to negotiate. The heavyweight bout is on New Providence, where Baha Mar's Royal Blue, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design, has been ranked the number one course in the Bahamas by Golfweek and takes golfers from oceanside holes into a wild back nine of limestone canyons and jungle. Across the bridge on Paradise Island, the Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis is a Tom Weiskopf design stretching more than 7,100 yards down a peninsula where the crosswind is the real defense. The out islands hold the purest golf in the country. Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma features a Greg Norman layout with six holes on a rocky peninsula that has hosted the Korn Ferry Tour, and the Abaco Club's tropical links hosts the Tour's Bahamas Great Abaco Classic. And every December, the golf world descends on ultra-private Albany when Tiger Woods brings the Hero World Challenge to town.
Between rounds, the Bahamas does the rest of the vacation better than almost anywhere. The casinos at Baha Mar and Atlantis anchor the buddies-trip case, the bonefishing flats of the Exumas and Abacos are world famous, and the swimming pigs of Big Major Cay remain the strangest boat trip in golf travel. Couples get the beaches, the spas, and water so blue it looks retouched. It is a three hour flight from most of the East Coast, the season is year round, and nobody has ever complained about the view from the practice green.
