Costa del Sol: Where Europe Goes to Play Golf
The Spanish tourism board calls this stretch of southern coastline the Costa del Sol. Golfers call it the Costa del Golf, and they have been calling it that since Robert Trent Jones Sr. dropped Real Club de Golf Sotogrande into the sand hills above the Mediterranean in 1964 and effectively invented European resort golf as we know it. Six decades and roughly 70 courses later, the nickname has earned itself.

This is the part of Spain that stretches from Malaga down toward Gibraltar, a 90-mile ribbon of beach towns, whitewashed mountain villages, and golf courses stacked so densely you can play a different track every day for two weeks and still leave with a list. Valderrama, where Seve captained Europe to its first Ryder Cup win on foreign soil in 1997, sits at the western end. Finca Cortesin, which hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup, is a short drive up the coast. Las Brisas, La Reserva, Sotogrande, Los Naranjos, Aloha, La Cala, Villa Padierna. The names just keep coming.

The weather cooperates roughly 325 days a year. The flights from most European hubs run two to three hours. The food is genuinely great, the wine is cheap by the glass and reasonable by the bottle, and the post-round culture leans long lunches and late dinners rather than early bedtimes. Bring a sweater for January mornings and a sense of humor for the par 5s at Valderrama.
